Three Years of Aichi Synchrotron Radiation Center
It is already three years since the opening of the Aichi Synchrotron Radiation Center (AichiSR) on March 26, 2013. The status of AichiSR in 2013 was reported in the previous message.
The status of AichiSR for the last three years is reviewed.
・The used shifts in 2015 was 1,628 (1 shift=4 hours), 1,409 in 2014, and 1061 in 2013. The increasing rate is much higher than expected. Fig. 1 shows the distribution of used shifts by Large Companies, Small & Medium-sized Companies, University-Company Collaborations, Universities, and Public Research Institutes. Shifts used by companies (including collaboration) are around 70% each year.
・200 organizations (companies and universities) used AichiSR during last three year. Among them, 53 new users in 2014 and 42 in 2015 joined our users. The members have been increasing steadily.
・The average of coefficient of utilization (used shifts*/available shifts) has been increasing from 63.8% in 2013, through 78.4% in 2015, to 81.2% in 2015.
The hard X-ray XAFS (BL5S1) has been overflowing. We added night shifts to respond to the demand. A new hard X-ray beam line is under construction to cover the still increasing demand.
・A new soft X-ray beam line (BL1N2) started its service on September 2015. This beam line was constructed by the supplemental budget from Monbusho in the Photon Beam Platform Project. There has been an energy gap to be covered by the XAFS, which is the energy range from 0.85keV to 1.75keV since a proper crystal for the double crystal X-ray monochromator was not available. b-Aluminum was tried but the X-ray radiation was too strong and damaged b-Aluminum. Since this beam line covers from 0.15keV to 2.0keV by changing three gratings, our beam lines as a whole cover from 0.05keV to 23keV without gap.
・Nagoya University constructed their own beam line for the single crystal X-ray diffraction, manly for the drug designing. The beam line is partly open for industrial use
・One more topic is the construction of DENSO beam line (BL2S3). This is the first beam line owned private company at AichiSR.
